Vape Flavours – What You Need To Know

With the rise of vaping in our modern culture, every Tom, Dick, and Harry have started selling vape flavours online, or in vending stalls at markets.  With the sudden influx of vaping goods, comes a lot of questions about the clouds emanating from every vapor’s mouth.  What goes into the liquid that produces the vape flavour?  Is it bad for you?

We have listed a few of the above questions in this article, in the hopes of shedding some light on the subject, and letting the smoke clear for you to see the vape clouds in the background.

What’s in them?

As with anything in life, there’s always more to something than meets the eye, and with vape flavours, there’s no exception.  It’s not a single ingredient that’s found on a tree that makes it taste like chocolate or vanilla.  There was a complicated process that went into developing and designing the liquids that you pour into your atomiser, and we’re going to tell you more about that.

The Base Liquid

The first (and main) ingredient in any vape flavour is the base liquid.  Usually it’s a mixture of Vegetable glycerine and Propylene glycol.  The amounts differ, depending on what the vaper is wanting out of his or her clouds.

Vegetable Glycerine

Vegetable glycerine (VG) usually makes up most of the liquid you see in a vape flavour.  Why is that?  Because the more you have of it, the larger and fuller your clouds will be.  But what is VG?

VG is made from vegetable fats and oils, but it isn’t an oil itself.  When you look at it under a microscope, it’s pretty much an alcohol instead, which means it’s safe to inhale.  VG is very viscous and thick, which mean that it doesn’t wick well with older atomisers, but this viscosity means that it produces incredible dense clouds with little-to-no hit in your throat.

In and of itself, it’s odourless, colourless, and aside from a slight sweetness, flavourless.  It’s used in many household products, such as sweeteners and food products to keep the moisture in.  This makes it perfect as a base for vape flavours, apart from the viscosity.  That’s where propylene glycol comes in to play.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol (PG) is the other alternative base liquid for your vape flavours.  Colourless, odourless, and also flavourless (apart from the slight sweet taste), it works as well as VG.  However, it’s less viscous, which means it wicks better than VG does.  Just like VG, propylene glycol is an alcohol as well, and it has no harmful effects on your body.  In fact, it’s used in medicines, food, and other household products to maintain moisture.  Because of this, it’s equally perfect to be used alongside VG as a base for vape flavours.

However, because it’s not as viscous as VG, propylene glycol tends to leave the vaper feeling disappointed in the lack of clouds it produces.  On the plus side, it carries the flavours better, and leaves a stronger throat hit at the end.  So what then?  Are vape flavours made up of VG or PG?  Well, the answer is a mixture of the two.

The Mixture

As with any great product, trial and error has to come into play.  Many vapers find that it takes a lot of different composition percentages of the two to create the perfect cloud with vape flavour retention.

Usually a mixture is made up of up to 80% VG, however it can go as low as 40%VG with the remaining percentage being PG, and a few drops of the required flavour mixture.  Usually mixtures with a higher percentage of PG are favoured by vapers that prefer to be less conspicuous about their vaping, as these mixtures tend to produce less clouds than ones that favour a higher VG concentration.

The Flavours

The next ingredient in any vape flavour, is the flavour itself.  It could be strawberry cheesecake, tutti frutti, or chocolate.  The exact ingredients always differ slightly, but the fact that a flavour is required remains the same.

It should be noted though, that when choosing a flavour for your vaping needs, always get one that comes from a reputable reseller, rather than someone who crafts the vape flavours from their garage, as health is always a top priority.  Don’t worry though, all reputable flavours and brands go through strict health and safety hoops to make sure that their products are safe for human consumption.

Additives

The last addition, and this one is optional, is additives.  The most common of these is nicotine.  As we all know, vaping is used as a way to get people to kick their harmful smoking habits.  The addiction to smoking comes from a nicotine addiction, and that’s why people add them to their vape flavours.

The strength of the nicotine is up to the individual, as some vapers require stronger amounts of nicotine in their vapes in order to get the same release as they would from smoking cigarette.  However, because the amount is adjustable, it means that you can slowly wean yourself off of the nicotine, until you’re just vaping the vanilla vape flavours, with no additives needed! 

Lately, a new additive has been making its rounds through the vaping world, and that is cannabidiol.  Cannabidiol is a non-hallucinogenic extract made from cannabis, but it is popular as it creates a relaxing and calming on the vaper.

All together though, these ingredients together make up the composition of a vape flavour, with the results and variations being as diverse as the people who use them.

Vaping Benefits?

As with any new trend, there are people who immediately jump on the “it’s bad for you” train.  Because vaping looks a lot like smoking, people immediately think “you’re going to kill yourself” if they catch you vaping, and they’ll say it to your face!  However, there’s a lot that the public doesn’t know about vape flavours, and the real health problems/benefits that they provide.  And aside from health benefits, there are other benefits that can be gained from switching to using vape flavours over cigarettes.

Breathing

The first benefit is the one that affects your lungs.  The problem with smoking is that it fills your lungs with smoke.  Smoke, that contains carbon monoxide, tar, and other harmful substances.  This clogs up the capillaries, and causes you to feel short of breath, and weaker in general.

However, with vaping none of those problems occur.  You see, the glycerine and glycol used in vaping has almost no harmful effects on your body, as the residue contained within the clouds created is very light.  This reduces the strain on your lungs, and allows you to enjoy your vape flavours more, without worrying about the side effects.

Naturally, the one potentially thing that should be mentioned is nicotine, as this is an additive, and can has side effects.  However, because you can adjust the amount of nicotine that you have in your vape flavour, it means that you can wean yourself off, and be a lot healthier in the process than you would be if you were smoking.

Cash

The next area that switching to vaping will benefit, is your pockets.  On average, a heavy smoker can smoke up to 2 or 3 packs a day.  That means that daily it could cost between R40-R150/day, depending on brand and quantity of cigarettes used.  After a while, this does tend to take a heavy toll on the bank account.

However, after the initial start-up costs of buying a vaping atomiser, and one or two “test” vape flavours, the monthly costs start to diminish quite exponentially.  You can save between 1/4, and 3/4 of the amount you used to spend on cigarettes by switching to vaping, and the vape flavours last a long time, and if you buy in bulk, you’ll save even more.

Residue

Smoke.  This is a problem that all smokers face.  Not just the grey clouds floating in the air, but the smell on the clothing and breath, and the yellow stains on the fingers and teeth.  Unfortunately this is a side effect of smoking, and not a pleasant one.  This is a huge problem for anyone in the business world, as smelling like you stepped out of a fireplace is not the best way to gain clients and jobs.

Luckily for vapers, they don’t have this problem.  You see, because most of the vaping clouds is made up of PG and VG (both odourless liquids), it means that there’s no residue left when you vape.  So it doesn’t matter if you have a quick puff from a friend’s atomiser to taste their latest vape flavour, as the smell won’t linger on your breath, clothes, fingers, or teeth.  Vaping also doesn’t stain the fingers and teeth, so you can taste as many flavours as your heart desires, without having to worry about the side effects, as the effects are minimal!

The Not-So-Harmful Vaping Benefits

Since vaping as a cultural phenomenon, and a brilliant way to quit smoking cigarettes exploded onto the scene a few years ago, there has been a debate happening under the surface with regards to the real vaping benefits when using e-cigarettes.  Since many people turn to the use of these devices as a way to combat smoking, it is not surprising to find a certain degree of concern with regards to the health deficits that they pose. While very few solid studies have been conducted into the harmful effects of vaping, those that have been done have shown that in comparison to traditional cigarettes, vaping benefits outweigh the concerns. So as an ex-smoker who has turned to the world of e-cigarettes, I have decided to launch my own investigation into the matter.

Vaping Benefits vs Dangers vs. cigarettes

As an ex-smoker of nearly 20 years, I can attest to the difference that I feel since switching over to e-cigarettes. Within just a few short weeks, my lungs have cleared up, I’ve lost my morning cough and I find it much easier to breathe at night. However could this be a placebo effect? A little research told me otherwise.

Vapes are free from the substantial amounts of tar and carbon and tar that one has to ingest when they set fire to a stick of straw and inhale it into their lungs. Much of the dangerous ingredients that can be found in commercial cigarettes are over-shadowed by the simple fact that you, as a smoker, are habitually inhaling carbon and all of the nastiness that comes with it, the same applies to hubblies by the way. The vaping benefits of the “smoke” that is given off by e-cigarettes is not only much cleaner than what would be produced by tobacco smoke, but the fact that it isn’t smoke, already makes it a much better alternative.

But what about popcorn lung?

Popcorn lung, most tobacco companies claim, is a direct result of vaping, and it is an irreversible disease whereby scarring is formed on the lungs due to the inhalation of propylene glycol, one of the key ingredients found in e-juice. But this ingredient is also found in tooth-paste, flavour enhances, and you guessed it, pop-corn flavouring (hence the name of the illness). This vicious rumour, which was started by tobacco companies isn’t far off of the mark, however its dangers have been greatly exaggerated. The lobbyists neglected to mention that you are 70% more likely to contract the illness from cigarettes than from vapes, and I’m sure that further studies (funded by honest folks without an agenda) will reinforce this to be a fallacy.

There are over 7 billion people living on this planet, and even without the addition of personal habits to think about, we often find it difficult getting on with each other’s lifestyle choices. As was the case with cigarettes, it was many years before people started publically voicing their disdain for the habit (especially non-smokers), and policies were quickly implemented the world over, to ensure that men and women everywhere didn’t have to put up with tobacco smoke being waved in their faces, and now the same outcries can be heard about public vaping.

The introduction of vaping lead to some grey areas in this regard. Since the vapour they produce doesn’t smell, is far less harmful that smoke and doesn’t linger like an old smell in the way cigarettes do, many vapers have taken to public vaping just about anywhere, absent minded. So before things get really ugly between vapers and those who don’t, here is some advice on public vaping etiquette that will ensure that you never get punched by a non-smoker for vaping.

Indoors is still indoors

When smoking was banned indoors some years ago, it caused quite a stir… amongst smokers; everyone else on the other hand could breathe a sigh of relief. The introduction of vaping seemed to have challenged the newly formed social taboo on the grounds that it isn’t quite as harmful as smoking. This attitude lead many a disgruntled vaper wondering why they were told off by security guards and upset passers-by. Vaping near children! Really?

The lady-next-to-you’s child has at no point made the conscious effort to start vaping, and the last thing their developing lungs need is an early start. Public vaping at the cinema

I must admit I am guilty of sneaking the odd pull of my vape in the back of the movie house, and I really should stop. Other than creating a blanket of awesome mist between the projector and the screen, the very sound of a vape in action van be quite a distraction during a movie, let alone the troubles mentioned in the paragraph about vaping indoors. If you want to get your fix during a film, it is probably best to take it outside just like the ‘inconvenienced’ smokers.

This one, quite recently, has been imposed by law, but there was a grey area surrounding it for a while. Just about all of the air on a long flight is recycled, and every passenger needs to breathe it. It’s difficult as it is breathing in that stuffy aeroplane air without having propylene glycol surfing the particles on the plane, so just like all of those uncomfortable smokers at the window seats, you’ll have to wait until touch down.
