Now that we know what MTL, or mouth to lung vaping is (read more here[Ed1] ), let’s find out a little more about the other type of vaping, namely direct to lung, or DTL.

What is direct to lung (DTL) vaping?

DTL-style vaping involves inhaling the vapour from an e-cigarette directly into your lungs, just like taking a normal breath. Because the vapour is denser than that used in MTL devices, it can be a little overwhelming for new users, which is why it’s usually favoured by more experienced vapers.

DTL vaping can take some getting used to for new vapers as, unlike mouth to lung vaping, this isn’t generally how you would inhale smoke from a cigarette.

DTL vape kits explained

The lower resistance in DTL kits allows the device’s coil to heat e-liquid at a higher temperature, creating the warmer, more dense clouds of vapour that many folks enjoy. This is also known as ‘sub ohm’ vaping.

If you’re into gadgets, this is for you! Devices are usually bigger and often include an LED screen with different wattage and other settings you can use to customise your vaping experience. That said, they can also be more complicated to use, which is why they’re generally suited to more experienced vapers.

Which e-liquids to choose?

Due to direct to lung, or ‘sub ohm’ kits producing more vapour, you’ll need to use a lower nicotine strength because you’ll get a stronger hit of nicotine in one go. A good rule of thumb is to start at a lower strength and increase it if you need something stronger.

Why DTL?

• DTL devices create a smoother, warmer and thicker vapour – because this means more nicotine with each draw, you can use a lower strength and get the same satisfaction.

2022 vaping trends see no end to vaping’s popularity, and the industry and its products are developing and evolving at a rapid pace. So, what’s on the cards for 2022? From devices to flavours and regulation, let’s take a look, in this first part of a two-part discussion.

#1 Flavours – anything goes

When it comes to vaping flavours, there’s already a huge amount on offer. 2022 looks set to deliver more luxurious flavours – imagine an ice mango, double apple or grape! Or what about some more intriguing dessert flavours like strawberry cheesecake, or cinnamon rolls – dessert and vaping all in one! Definitely something to look forward to!

#2 Devices – small yet efficient

Smaller sometimes is better – in terms of convenience that is. Most vapers prefer devices that are easy to handle and use. It’s probable that we’ll see vaping devices like personal charging cases (PCCs) shrink even more, meaning that vapers will be able to carry e-cigarettes or vaping pens wherever they want! The trick is to not compromise on the vapour-producing ability. So, while efficiency increases, so too does ease of use.

#3 Stricter regulation (sorry)

We’ve spoken before about vaping and the so-called sin tax. Year after year we see the usual increases in duties on wine, beer and cigarettes. 2022 added an additional category to the sin tax collective – vaping products. Government has proposed the introduction of a new tax on vaping products of at least R2.90 per millilitre from 1 January 2023. Probably not something that will inhibit sales and usage, but good to keep an eye on developments in this regard.

#4 Smartphone-oriented devices?

Wouldn’t it be cool to connect your vaping devices to your smartphone via Bluetooth? Sound far-fetched? Not really, it’s been on the cards for some time now. This would enable users to get relevant info about vape status for instance – another e-convenience in our digital world.

#5 Ice, ice baby

Possibly not something that will be as popular in winter as in summer, ice liquids combine enticing flavours with cool and refreshing ice to satisfy the vaper’s soul. And on the plus side, the sale and popularity of summer vape flavours may surge too. It’s a win-win!

Vaping’s Economic Impact: How the Industry Fuels South Africa’s Growth

Sure, the e-cigarette movement is all about a healthier alternative to tobacco products, but have you ever given any thought to how the vapour industry makes a substantial contribution to the South African economy as well?

Budget 2022’s announcement of the introduction of a tax on vape products from 1 January 2023 has been anticipated for some time now (more about that next time), but let’s unpack just how significant an impact this niche but growing industry has on the country’s economic growth.

The stats don’t lie

Commissioned by the Vapour Products Association of South Africa (VPASA), and undertaken by NKC African Economics, The Economic Impact of the Vaping Industry in South Africa study looks at the industry’s economic contribution in terms of gross value added (GVA) contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), employment and tax revenue. The results make interesting reading.

Released in 2021, and looking at research results for 2019, the study shows that in 2019, the industry contributed R2.49 billion in GVA to the economy, paid R710 million in taxes, and employed approximately 9 500 people.

And then along came lockdown …

… and the banning of the sale of tobacco and vaping products. According to the VPASA, approximately R100 million in revenue was lost in the first four months of the lockdown by the vaping industry. Before lockdown, estimates stood at about 350 000 vapers in South Africa, with the e-cigarette market valued at about R1 billion.

The silver lining

The resilience of the industry is not to be underestimated. A study by global management consulting firm Canback revealed that the local vaping market grew by an average of 10% a year over the past decade, and the growing demand for vaping products is expected to generate more than 14,000 jobs by 2027, with growth in related employment of 13% annually during the same period. Those are some pretty significant growth forecasts.

Takeaway

In a country like South Africa, where small to medium enterprises constitute more than 98% of trade and employ up to 60% of the country’s workforce (according to McKinsey & Company), entrepreneurship and job creation are areas where the vapour industry can make a significant contribution towards a post-COVID-19 recovery, and to economic growth – areas where any contribution is to be welcomed.

Choosing the Right E-Liquid Strength: A Guide for Ex-Smokers

Apart from the flavour, what is the right strength for you when it comes to choosing an e-liquid? Especially if you took up vaping to quit smoking cigarettes, the strength of the juice plays a massive role. But what do the numbers on the label even mean?

What is a milligram on the label?

E-liquids are labelled with the strength of the product in milligrams. This refers to the strength of the nicotine in the e-juice – and it can be as low as zero milligrams. In certain countries, like Australia, dealers are only allowed to sell 0% strength.

A rough guide is to choose a higher nicotine content if you prefer a mouth-to-lung device. If you’d rather have a cloudier experience with a high VG and you are using a sub-ohm device, you would want to go lower: 9 mg and less.

Many vapers trying to kick cigarette smoking choose an e-liquid that looks equal to the strength of a cigarette. The idea is then to cut down in strength over time until, ideally, quitting completely. This tends to backfire, though.

Advice: To start with, just aim for the middle,. You can always increase the strength over time, but starting out with a high nicotine content could put you off vaping forever. A high nicotine content could lead to coughing or a burning sensation in your throat. Less is more! Start off lower … and if you feel you’re not getting the satisfaction you crave, vape a little more and bump up your next batch.

What about VG and PG?

Vegetable glycerine (VG) and propylene glycol (PG) are the main components of any e-liquid and are added to enhance its attributes. Other than VG and PG, e-liquids could contain nicotine, distilled water and flavouring agents. Most of your e-liquids are composed mainly of these components.

PG carries flavour really well, while VG doesn’t carry as much flavour but will give you a much billowier vapour cloud and a softer hit in your throat. High-PG e-liquids form a smaller cloud but enhance the hit you get from each puff.

So how to choose? If you’re aiming for a flavour burst, go for a higher PG. But if a billowing cloud does it for you, choose a liquid with a higher VG.

In the past, most commercial liquids contained VG and PG in equal parts. These days, though, people tend to want bigger clouds, and so a higher ratio of VG has become the norm. The ratio can be as high as 75-25%, especially when mixed for high-ohm devices.

Some devices are designed specifically for a mouth-to-lung experience. These devices use the thinner PG/VG mixtures, but with enhanced flavour and more nicotine.

Advice: Aim for the best ratio for your device. Smaller vaping holes are designed for a stronger hit. Bigger tanks and bigger coils with wider vaping holes are designed for a bigger cloud.

Takeaway

Many vapers, especially smokers trying to switch, look for an e-liquid that gives them the same taste they used to get from smoking tobacco. This is problematic, mostly because cigarettes – or even pipes – taste dreadful. We get addicted to the nicotine, and as an afterthought we get used to the flavour. You learn to deal with the flavour and get used to it over time.

It is nearly impossible to replicate that same flavour in an e-liquid. What can be replicated, though, is the taste of tobacco – but that is obviously what it tastes and smells like before being lit. It’s like the difference between smoking a cigarette and drinking tea made from fresh tobacco leaves – not nearly the same flavour profile.

Yet, some do enjoy these artificial tobacco flavours, especially if it contains a bit of sweetness or vanilla to enhance the taste. Why not try the Hazelnut Tobacco e-liquid or Horny Flava’s Coffee Tobacco Liquid?

Advice: You will never be able to replace the taste of cigarettes with a vape. BUT … you can learn to enjoy the various flavours available on the market. How to clean your vape device – Part 2

Cleaning coils and batteries is a little more complicated than cleaning the tank and mouthpiece; you obviously can’t simply dunk them in water.

How do I know my coil needs cleaning or replacing?

A coil lasts between two and four weeks, and you’ll know it’s time, because the e-liquid flavour will taste slightly burnt, and will be a lot weaker. You may also notice that there’s not as much vapour being produced, and the coil may look darker, or leak. This is the time to replace it entirely.

And the battery?

When talking about cleaning the ‘battery’, we mean the chunky mod section of your vape, not the actual battery inside it. This section doesn’t need as thorough cleaning as the tank, but it is nice to spruce it up every now and then. 

Now it goes without saying that you won’t clean this in the same way as the tank – submerging the battery (and all of the electrical components) in water is definitely a very bad idea!

All you need to do is wipe down the outside of your mod with a clean cloth or antibacterial wipe, to remove any dirt and germs – nothing more is needed.

The tank is the section that holds your e-liquid. It’s logical that this should be cleaned every time you change your e-liquid flavour. What if I use the same flavour long-term? If that’s the case, aim to clean your tank every few weeks. A clean tank means that you get the very best flavours, whether you switch it up regularly, or stick with the same tried-and-tested favourite.

Step-by-step

1. Disassemble your device – Remove the tank from the battery mod, remove the coil from the tank, and empty out any remaining e-liquid.
2. If you have any, remove additional pieces, like a mouthpiece for instance.
3.  Place all of the tank components (not the coil or battery) into a bowl of warm water. A dash of dishwashing liquid helps to clean particularly grimy bits. Wash the parts until clean. If you don’t have a proper cleaning kit, an old toothbrush is useful for getting to those hard-to-reach places.
4. Given the amount of bacteria in human saliva, you may want to spend a little more time and attention on cleaning your mouthpiece to ensure all the germs are dealt with.
5. Rinse with clean water, and admire your sparkly clean tank!
6. Wipe everything off with a clean, dry cloth and leave to fully dry.

A brief history of vaping

Vaping devices have evolved at an incredible rate since the invention of the first modern e-cigarette in 2003.

Over the years there were attempts at inventions, but the e-cigarette as we know it today was invented by Chinese smoker and pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003. Lik, a heavy smoker himself, is said to have been spurred to invent a new device after his own father, also a smoker, died of lung cancer. 

Around 2006, vaping was first introduced in Europe, and it wasn’t long before it made its way into the US. The popularity of e-cigarettes has skyrocketed in South Africa over the last few years, since being billed as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes, and as a great tool to help smokers quit altogether. 

Moving from the 2003 cig-a-like, to the vape pens of the mid-2000s, the early 2010’s mods and the most recent pod mods, there’s no shortage of options when it comes to choosing the device that suits you best.

Breaking it down

Before embarking on your vaping journey, it’s good to know about the device you’re using. In a nutshell, e-cigarettes are electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) that emit doses of vaporised nicotine (non-nicotine options are also available) that are then inhaled.

Before we get into these, let’s go back to basics, and explore exactly what nicotine is. In essence, nicotine is a chemical compound found in tobacco. Because it’s the main ingredient found in this plant, it goes without saying that it’s the key ingredient of many tobacco products, like cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, cigars, hookah tobacco, and most e-cigarettes and vapes. Nicotine is a stimulant that affects the brain, which explains why it is difficult to quit smoking.

Just how much nicotine is in a cigarette?

On average, most cigarettes contain about 10 to 12 milligrams of nicotine per cigarette. This obviously varies depending on the brand of the cigarette. Some can contain about 6 milligrams of nicotine, with others reaching up to 28 milligrams. Now not all of the nicotine is inhaled; as the cigarette burns, some of the nicotine is released. It’s estimated that an average smoker inhales about 1 to 2 milligrams of nicotine in an entire cigarette. The number of puffs in a cigarette also depends on various factors, like how often the smoker inhales, how big of a puff they take, and how long the cigarette burns.

Every year, when the Minister of Finance presents his annual budget in Parliament, South Africans hold their collective breath in anticipation of increases in the so-called sin taxes.

Moving on up

And the Minister never ceases to disappoint. Year after year we see the usual increases in duties on wine, beer and cigarettes. 2022 added an additional category to the sin tax collective – vaping products.

Government has proposed the introduction of a new tax on vaping products of at least R2.90 per milliliter from 1 January 2023.

The writing has been on the wall for some time. National Treasury published a draft discussion paper in December 2021, followed by a request for public comment in the run-up to the 2022 budget presentation in February. The previous two budget speeches have contained hints of Government’s plans to start taxing electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS), commonly known as e-cigarettes.

This means that vapers will inevitably have to fork out more to enjoy their favourite pastime. Production costs will increase, with the inevitable trickle down to consumers of these products. But are there any positives?

A victim of its own success?

As we’ve said before, the South African vaping market grew by an average of 10% a year over the past decade, with the industry expected to generate 14,000 jobs by 2027, and to contribute in related employment by 13% annually during the same period.

While this growth is phenomenally positive, and exposes more and more people to the healthier alternative to tobacco products, it’s clearly caught the eye of the tax authorities, as a significant opportunity to contribute to the government tax coffers.

There’s always a silver lining

But as with everything, there are two sides to the story. Taxes are a fact of life, and necessary for any economy to flourish. The fact that eyes are now turning to the vapour industry means that it’s viewed as a serious sector for future economic growth. This in turn opens up potential for investment and the expansion of the industry. Which exposes us to an exponentially greater – and increasing – consumer base.

When it comes to starting out as a vaper, you might be overwhelmed by which vape device to buy.  The choices are limitless, with vape pens, box mods, mechanical mods, and custom coils being mentioned left, right, and center.  So what types of vape device are out there, and which one should you go for?  This article should help shed some light on the subject, and blow away the clouds surrounding vaping.

Vape Pens

The first kind of vape device that you\’ll encounter is a vape pen.  Sometimes called e-cigarettes, they\’re fairly common for casual vapers, who are using vaping as a way to kick the smoking habit.  As the name implies, they\’re long and narrow, shaped not unlike a writing pen.  The size and shape means that they\’re usually powered by a single 18650 battery, or are equipped with a rechargeable, closed-system battery.  The benefits from using the vape pen-style vape device, is that they\’re discreet.  They\’re small, which means they can fit in a handbag, pocket, or desk drawer without being conspicuous.  They\’re a \”fill and go\” style vape device, with very few settings, tweaks, or requirements to be met before you can start using them.  A low wattage means low clouds however, so if you\’re aiming to be a cloud chaser, then a vape pen isn\’t the best option for you.

Pod Mods

The next variant of a vape device is the pod mod.  This one is similar to a vape pen, but even easier to use.  Where the vape pen can often have external batteries, and will need to be filled each time the e-liquid runs low, the pod-based devices don\’t need that.  As the name implies, the flavour is stored in small, easy to replace pods.  Although this means that you won\’t be able to get every delicious flavour that one can find in a vape store, such as Flavair\’s Mad Mango or Keep It 100\’s Blue Slushie.  Howver, the ease of not needing to carry a flavour bottle around, or risk messing during the filling process more than makes up for that.  You even get some pod mods that are breath-activated, which means you won\’t need to press a button to heat up the coils.  This mod is definitely useful for the discreet vaper.

Box Mods

The third kind of vape device that\’s commonly seen is box mods.  This variant of vape device has a larger range and more options for the amateur and professional vaper alike.  These vape devices are significantly larger than vape pens, and for a good reason.  They generally have a larger battery capacity, and often offer variable wattage.  What does this mean for the layman?  It means that the flavour and intensity of the clouds created can be adjusted and tweaked to suit the vaper.  Mod boxes often allow the vaper the flexibility to attach their own sub-ohm tanks to the vape device, which means that you\’re not stuck with the standard stock coils that you\’d get if you were using a vape pen.

Mechanical Mods

The creme de la creme of vaping, is the mechanical mod.  They\’re made up of a few components, but which components are used, makes all the difference in the world.  In simple terms, this vape device is a body that houses a power source, and an atomizer.  You press the button, and the coils in the atomizer heat up to vaporise the e-liquid into the clouds that we all know and love.  However, where it gets complicated, is that each coil has to be hand-built before the device can be used.  Many of the vape device accidents that you\’ve heard of in the news happen when beginners use this device without the proper knowhow.  You see, the wattage isn\’t regulated, so the coil thickness and length has to be just right in order to achieve the perfect balance between temperature and time.

Vapor Smoke versus Real Smoke

One of the biggest problems faced by vapers these days, is the fact that the general public don’t know the difference between vapor smoke and real smoke.  They see a large billowing cloud and think “disgusting, don’t they know it’s bad for you?!”, but is it really?  Let’s have a closer look at the two clouds, and see if vapor smoke really is as bad are real smoke, or whether it’s the healthier alternative.

Many people will look at two clouds, one of real smoke, and one of vapor smoke, and say they don’t see any difference, and that’s is the purpose of this article.  To look closer than eye-view, to the microscopic and molecular levels, to see what the real differences are between the two of them.

The Contents

There is one element that is present in both vapor smoke and real smoke, and that is nicotine.  It’s the addictive substance that helps smokers transition to vaping.  Some vapers prefer the nicotine-free e-liquids though, as their goals are aimed more at unlocking flavour, and creating billowing clouds.  Either way, nicotine is the only similarity between vapor smoke and real smoke.

Knowing what goes into cigarettes and vape e-liquids, can often help in determining what level of danger you’d be in if you smoke, as opposed to if you vape.

Vapor Smoke Contents

What is in vapor smoke?  Usually, there’s a combination of Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerin )VG), Acetaldehyde, and Nitrosamines.  Over and above that, you will get a combination of chemicals related to the flavors you find in vape flavors, but most of them are considered safe for consumption, and are marked at food grade.  There have been extensive tests that show vaping has minimal harmful consequences for the human body, however the same can’t be said about real smoke.

Real Smoke Contents

What’s in real smoke though?  Well, there’s a list of chemicals that probably should be locked away in a lab, but here’s the most common ingredients found in cigarettes.  As mentioned earlier, nicotine is found in cigarettes.  However, there’s also carbon monoxide, benzene, hydrogen cyanide, lead, arsenic, ammonia, and a few other chemicals.  If you had to name each chemical, it would take a long time to get through them all, so most people just refer to them by their more common name, which would be “tar”.  Yes, that’s correct, cigarette smoke contains the road you drive on.

The Differences

Now onto the real issue at hand, the differences.  What’s in real smoke that makes it so different from vapor smoke, they look the same don’t they?  Well, the answer is a very big “no”.  Real smoke is produced by burning substances, and smoke (as everyone knows) is a particle-based gas.  That’s where the carbon monoxide comes from in cigarette smoke, from burning carbon-based ingredients.  If you look closer, you’ll discover that what’s in the smoke, is every different from what’s in the cigarette, due to the addition of fire. 

Vapor smoke on the other hand is very different, as the vapor you’re looking at is the evaporated ingredients of the vape e-liquid.  No combustion means no chemical changes, which means you know exactly what’s going in and out.  As the chemicals used in vaping are safe for human consumption, it means that there’s no long-term effects on the human body, compared to regular smoking.

Effects on your body

The next question that everyone asks is “what’s the difference in the effects of vapor smoke vs real smoke?”.  A very pertinent question indeed, and luckily we have a few insights into the effects of both methods.  Let’s have a look at real smoke first.  If you have a glance at the list of ingredients above, you’ll notice that they look quite harmful, and you’d be right.  Many of them are on the list of carcinogenic substances, which means they have a high chance of causing cancer in the human body.  Understandably, it makes sense why people rather switch to vaping, as vapor smoke has none of those ingredients.  Long term effects of smoking includes poor skin, weak hair, yellowed teeth, lung cancer, and more.  The long term effects of vape smoke have yet to be discovered (as it’s a fairly new invention), but tests thus far haven’t found any long-term detrimental side effects to vaping.

The Final Word

So then which should you go for, vaping or smoking?  Well if you look at the facts above, you’ll agree that vapor smoke is a lot healthier than the commonplace alternative, and that should help you in your fact-finding, and subsequent decisions.  There are many vape devices to choose from, some advanced, and some easy enough for anyone to use.

Vape Flavours – What You Need To Know

With the rise of vaping in our modern culture, every Tom, Dick, and Harry have started selling vape flavours online, or in vending stalls at markets.  With the sudden influx of vaping goods, comes a lot of questions about the clouds emanating from every vapor’s mouth.  What goes into the liquid that produces the vape flavour?  Is it bad for you?

We have listed a few of the above questions in this article, in the hopes of shedding some light on the subject, and letting the smoke clear for you to see the vape clouds in the background.

What’s in them?

As with anything in life, there’s always more to something than meets the eye, and with vape flavours, there’s no exception.  It’s not a single ingredient that’s found on a tree that makes it taste like chocolate or vanilla.  There was a complicated process that went into developing and designing the liquids that you pour into your atomiser, and we’re going to tell you more about that.

The Base Liquid

The first (and main) ingredient in any vape flavour is the base liquid.  Usually it’s a mixture of Vegetable glycerine and Propylene glycol.  The amounts differ, depending on what the vaper is wanting out of his or her clouds.

Vegetable Glycerine

Vegetable glycerine (VG) usually makes up most of the liquid you see in a vape flavour.  Why is that?  Because the more you have of it, the larger and fuller your clouds will be.  But what is VG?

VG is made from vegetable fats and oils, but it isn’t an oil itself.  When you look at it under a microscope, it’s pretty much an alcohol instead, which means it’s safe to inhale.  VG is very viscous and thick, which mean that it doesn’t wick well with older atomisers, but this viscosity means that it produces incredible dense clouds with little-to-no hit in your throat.

In and of itself, it’s odourless, colourless, and aside from a slight sweetness, flavourless.  It’s used in many household products, such as sweeteners and food products to keep the moisture in.  This makes it perfect as a base for vape flavours, apart from the viscosity.  That’s where propylene glycol comes in to play.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol (PG) is the other alternative base liquid for your vape flavours.  Colourless, odourless, and also flavourless (apart from the slight sweet taste), it works as well as VG.  However, it’s less viscous, which means it wicks better than VG does.  Just like VG, propylene glycol is an alcohol as well, and it has no harmful effects on your body.  In fact, it’s used in medicines, food, and other household products to maintain moisture.  Because of this, it’s equally perfect to be used alongside VG as a base for vape flavours.

However, because it’s not as viscous as VG, propylene glycol tends to leave the vaper feeling disappointed in the lack of clouds it produces.  On the plus side, it carries the flavours better, and leaves a stronger throat hit at the end.  So what then?  Are vape flavours made up of VG or PG?  Well, the answer is a mixture of the two.

The Mixture

As with any great product, trial and error has to come into play.  Many vapers find that it takes a lot of different composition percentages of the two to create the perfect cloud with vape flavour retention.

Usually a mixture is made up of up to 80% VG, however it can go as low as 40%VG with the remaining percentage being PG, and a few drops of the required flavour mixture.  Usually mixtures with a higher percentage of PG are favoured by vapers that prefer to be less conspicuous about their vaping, as these mixtures tend to produce less clouds than ones that favour a higher VG concentration.

The Flavours

The next ingredient in any vape flavour, is the flavour itself.  It could be strawberry cheesecake, tutti frutti, or chocolate.  The exact ingredients always differ slightly, but the fact that a flavour is required remains the same.

It should be noted though, that when choosing a flavour for your vaping needs, always get one that comes from a reputable reseller, rather than someone who crafts the vape flavours from their garage, as health is always a top priority.  Don’t worry though, all reputable flavours and brands go through strict health and safety hoops to make sure that their products are safe for human consumption.

Additives

The last addition, and this one is optional, is additives.  The most common of these is nicotine.  As we all know, vaping is used as a way to get people to kick their harmful smoking habits.  The addiction to smoking comes from a nicotine addiction, and that’s why people add them to their vape flavours.

The strength of the nicotine is up to the individual, as some vapers require stronger amounts of nicotine in their vapes in order to get the same release as they would from smoking cigarette.  However, because the amount is adjustable, it means that you can slowly wean yourself off of the nicotine, until you’re just vaping the vanilla vape flavours, with no additives needed! 

Lately, a new additive has been making its rounds through the vaping world, and that is cannabidiol.  Cannabidiol is a non-hallucinogenic extract made from cannabis, but it is popular as it creates a relaxing and calming on the vaper.

All together though, these ingredients together make up the composition of a vape flavour, with the results and variations being as diverse as the people who use them.

Vaping Benefits?

As with any new trend, there are people who immediately jump on the “it’s bad for you” train.  Because vaping looks a lot like smoking, people immediately think “you’re going to kill yourself” if they catch you vaping, and they’ll say it to your face!  However, there’s a lot that the public doesn’t know about vape flavours, and the real health problems/benefits that they provide.  And aside from health benefits, there are other benefits that can be gained from switching to using vape flavours over cigarettes.

Breathing

The first benefit is the one that affects your lungs.  The problem with smoking is that it fills your lungs with smoke.  Smoke, that contains carbon monoxide, tar, and other harmful substances.  This clogs up the capillaries, and causes you to feel short of breath, and weaker in general.

However, with vaping none of those problems occur.  You see, the glycerine and glycol used in vaping has almost no harmful effects on your body, as the residue contained within the clouds created is very light.  This reduces the strain on your lungs, and allows you to enjoy your vape flavours more, without worrying about the side effects.

Naturally, the one potentially thing that should be mentioned is nicotine, as this is an additive, and can has side effects.  However, because you can adjust the amount of nicotine that you have in your vape flavour, it means that you can wean yourself off, and be a lot healthier in the process than you would be if you were smoking.

Cash

The next area that switching to vaping will benefit, is your pockets.  On average, a heavy smoker can smoke up to 2 or 3 packs a day.  That means that daily it could cost between R40-R150/day, depending on brand and quantity of cigarettes used.  After a while, this does tend to take a heavy toll on the bank account.

However, after the initial start-up costs of buying a vaping atomiser, and one or two “test” vape flavours, the monthly costs start to diminish quite exponentially.  You can save between 1/4, and 3/4 of the amount you used to spend on cigarettes by switching to vaping, and the vape flavours last a long time, and if you buy in bulk, you’ll save even more.

Smoke.  This is a problem that all smokers face.  Not just the grey clouds floating in the air, but the smell on the clothing and breath, and the yellow stains on the fingers and teeth.  Unfortunately this is a side effect of smoking, and not a pleasant one.  This is a huge problem for anyone in the business world, as smelling like you stepped out of a fireplace is not the best way to gain clients and jobs.

Luckily for vapers, they don’t have this problem.  You see, because most of the vaping clouds is made up of PG and VG (both odourless liquids), it means that there’s no residue left when you vape.  So it doesn’t matter if you have a quick puff from a friend’s atomiser to taste their latest vape flavour, as the smell won’t linger on your breath, clothes, fingers, or teeth.  Vaping also doesn’t stain the fingers and teeth, so you can taste as many flavours as your heart desires, without having to worry about the side effects, as the effects are minimal!

Vape Clouds: Flavour vs Size

When it comes to vaping, there are two main groups of fans.  The first group focus solely on creating giant, billowing, impressive vape clouds, often called cloud chasers.  The other group prefer to enjoy finer, tastier, flavour-rich clouds, called flavour chasers.  But what makes the clouds billow, and what unlocks the flavour? 

Cloud Chasers

When it comes to creating lots of vape clouds, the solution is to follow in the footsteps of all the cloud chasers that have gone before you.  You’re going to need a large enough tank to hold the e-liquid, sufficient airflow, preferably a sub-ohm or low ohmage coil with a large surface area, and of course the right ratio of PG to VG in your e-liquid. But why those specific components?

Airflow

Airflow is important for many reasons.  The first, and most important one, however, is the dispersion of heat.  When you heat up the coil to vaporise the e-liquid, you need airflow to carry the vapour from the coils to your mouth so that you can inhale it.  However, if you don’t get enough air over the coils, they could overheat and burn the wicks, which will ruin the taste of your vaping until you replace the coils/cotton.  Why is that?  Well, the faster the airflow, the cooler the coils become, which in turn means you can get even more clouds, and so the cycle repeats.  Choosing a tank with a large airflow is the first important step to becoming a cloud chaser.

Wattage

The next step is the wattage of the coils themselves.  The higher the wattage, the faster the coils heat up, and potentially the more clouds you can create, so long as it doesn’t get too hot that is.  Naturally vaping at 30W will produce much less than vaping at 100W, but the heat can still be a problem for many aspiring vapers.

Some people prefer a hotter vape, whereas others prefer a “cool” vape.  The solution?  Use a mod with variable wattage, and start experimenting.  Start at it’s lowest wattage setting, and take a few puffs, then increase the wattage and try again.  Keep increasing until you find the perfect balance of heat vs clouds, and you’re sorted.  Just keep in mind that a higher wattage means more airflow is needed.

Coils

Generally, it’s a good idea to choose a low-resistance coil over a high one when wanting to create vape clouds, as lower resistance wires heat up faster than high resistance ones, this is basic science at work here. It is also good practice for cloud-chasing to use coils with a larger surface area, as opposed to more basic, round wire builds/sub-ohm coils. However, the higher resistance wires have less of a drain on the battery, so they’re sometimes favoured by vapers who want their batteries to last longer.  With new batteries being developed every day though, there isn’t really a lot of vapers using high-resistance coils these days. The aforementioned is the realm of MTL or Mouth to Lung vaping.

Although thinner coils heat up a lot faster than thicker ones, they might not necessarily be the best choice.  Some vapers prefer thicker coils, and the heat is more evenly distributed, and the heat stays in the coil longer, which saves energy.

A low resistance sub-ohm coils with lots of cores or complex Clapton coil is generally recommended by most skilled cloud chasers for creating billowing vape clouds. The resistance is low and so high amp batteries will be required for this. The results are quite breathtaking to behold.

Flavour Chasers

You might be wondering why we didn’t mention the e-liquids in the last section, and there’s a good reason for that.  The composition of the e-liquid affects the flavour of the vape as much as the clouds, so we had to separate it to explain why that is.  However, the liquid composition isn’t the only thing that vapers can use to increase the flavour gained through their vape clouds.

Airflow

As mentioned with cloud chasing, airflow plays a big part in unlocking the vape flavours, but in the completely opposite way.  More airflow = more clouds, however, more airflow can also = less flavour.  If you’re wanting to produce clouds that have a richer, stronger flavour, then it’s recommended that you get a tank or dripper with a variable airflow (not fully opened), as it will ensure a more concentrated flow of vapour is carried through to your lungs, which improves the flavour.

Wattage

Wattage also influences the flavour of the vapes.  When the e-liquid designers come up with the flavours, they have to add each element to the liquid to create that chocolate milk taste, strawberry jam and toast, or vanilla tastes that everyone loves.  However, as each component is different, they all vaporise at different temperatures.  Try experimenting with different wattages to see which flavours come out.  It might be that you’ll get a hazelnut flavour at 35W, but the vanilla will come through at 45W instead.  Once you find the “sweet spot” where the flavour is to your liking, make a note of it for that flavour.

Composition

And now the important part, the liquid itself.  We all know that the main components of e-liquids (after the flavours) is PG and VG, and it’s the mixture of both that gives us the flavour as well as the clouds.  But which one influences which outcome?

When it comes to flavour, PG stores it a lot better than VG.  It’s thicker, and so holds more flavour when it evaporates.  However, VG is a lot better at generating billowing vape clouds.  Usually, the most common ratio of VG to PG is 70/30, but some more experienced vapers like to mix their own liquids, creating their own ratios instead.  The more PG in the mix, the more it will hit you at the back of your throat, but the stronger the flavour will be.  If you have a higher level of VG in the mix, the flavour will be weaker, but the clouds will be oh so beautiful to behold.

Final words

In short, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to vape.  Some vapers prefer clouds, some prefer flavours.  It’s up to you to discover which one you want, and then the experimentation process can begin so that you can create your own perfect vape clouds.

Electronic Cigarette 101

The vaping trend has taken the world by storm, and companies are constantly developing new devices to suit everyday vaping needs. Electronic cigarettes are one of those device typesI. 

What are they?

So what is an electronic cigarette?  Many hardcore vapers take offence when people attach electronic cigarettes to the definition of “vaping”, but there is some truth in it.  Although not a vape-mod in the strictest sense, there are a few core elements that are used in getting both vape-mods, and electronic cigarettes to create the voluminous clouds that we all know and love. 

Electronic cigarettes run on battery-power, as does a vape mod, and some use replaceable batteries.  However, the more common variety use built-in batteries that have to be charged through a built-in port on the body of the electronic cigarette.  However, the capacity of the electronic cigarette’s battery is usually a lot smaller than a vape mod, as the body is smaller, and so naturally, the larger the body, the larger the batter it can take.

An electronic cigarette also has an atomiser, and a coil too.  They might not be rebuildable or customisable, but they work just as well as any stock coil that you can get for a vape mod.  The nice thing about electronic cigarette coils though, is that they’re easy to change and replace, and don’t require lengthy recoiling and replacement times.

In essence, electronic cigarettes are self-contained, mini vape units.  They don’t require hours of training to use, and can be up and running straight out of the box (once you have added the flavour that you’re wanting).  They’re long and cylindrical to mimic the shape, look, and feel of a regular cigarette (albeit, slightly larger than the normal cigarettes that people are used to), but still being a lot smaller, and easier to use than a standalone RBA or RTA.

Electronic Cigarette Pros and Cons?

As with anything in life, there are pros and cons to electronic cigarettes.  If they were perfect, no-one would use anything else, however if they were bad, they wouldn’t be used at all.  Because of this, we have listed a few of the main benefits and problems people find with electronic cigarettes.

Benefits

So why would someone go for an electronic cigarette, as opposed to using a customisable vape system, or RBA?  Well, there are many benefits to using electronic cigarettes, some of them parallel benefits that one would get from using any vaping device, whereas there are also other benefits that help set them apart from the rest of the crowd, and we’re going to delve into those now.

Health

The first (and most obvious) benefit is the health benefits to be gained from electronic cigarettes.  As implied in the name, they are offered as an alternative to smoking regular cigarettes, and the health benefits are huge.  As we all know, it’s not the nicotine in cigarettes that kills people, but rather the other foreign elements included in cigarettes, such as tar, and the excess carbon-monoxide that’s produced.  However, as vaping doesn’t require the use of tar or other elements in the production and use, it means that there’s an immediate health benefit.  Nicotine is added, as electronic cigarettes were created as a way to break free of smoking addiction, and so the levels and strengths of nicotine can be adjusted to suit each individual need.

Size

The first benefit is size.  Electronic cigarettes are very small compared to regular vape mod devices.  Usually they have a slightly larger diameter than a ballpoint pen, and they’re about the same length.  This means that you can store one in your handbag, jacket, or pants pocket with ease.  The smaller size also means a smaller tank, which means you won’t have to go through ml’s of a single flavour before you can change the taste.  With 1ml or 2ml tanks, they offer bite-sized amounts of flavour, just enough to keep you happy without getting bored.

Cost

Although you wouldn’t think so, long-term electronic cigarette use can be a lot cheaper than regular cigarette use.  There’s an initial start-up cost when getting your electronic cigarette, and these can be anywhere from R400-R1500, but once you’ve collected the various e-liquids and flavours you’re wanting, the monthly costs compared to regular smoking will drop drastically.  Studies have shown that it can be up to 40% cheaper long-term than regular smoking.  And that’s through getting regular amounts of e-liquids.  Many people buy flavours in bulk to further save money. 

Ease-of-use

The next benefit, is the simplicity of it all.  Many professional vapers and cloud-chasers prefer using RBA mods to create their own custom-made coils for the perfect cloud, and this tends to put people off vaping, as it looks too complicated to get into.  However, with electronic cigarettes, simplicity is key.  As they’re made of self-contained segments (coil head, tank, battery etc), it’s easy to maintain.  If a part breaks or gets old, you simply replace it, and carry on vaping.  No need for custom coils, expanded tanks, or higher-capacity batteries.  A simple buy-and-switch, or (in the case of low batteries) plug-in-and-charge, and you can use your electronic cigarette in no time.

Problems

Where there are benefits, there are also problems.  Although not deal-breaking overall, they should be mentioned as well.

Battery

Electronic cigarettes are smaller than regular vape mods, this is true.  However, because of the small size, the battery has to be smaller too.  What does this mean for you?  It means that although the charge time is reduced, so is the overall use time of an electronic cigarette.

Fluid

As mentioned with the battery, size is an issue.  The fluid-tank sizes on electronic cigarettes are a lot smaller than that on a RBA or RDTA.  This means that a unicorn bottle filled with your flavour of the day must always be on hand, as it won’t take long for you to finish your “Tutti-Frutti” or “Milk Tart” vape flavours.  Time will have to be taken to fill up the tank as well.

Clouds

Ignoring the popular consensuses that “electronic cigarettes aren’t vaping devices”, as stated by professional cloud chasers and Vapers, there is something that has to be said about the clouds produced by an electronic cigarette.  Because each component is self-contained, it’s very difficult to engineer the voltage and coils in such a way as to create the perfect billowing clouds that you see on Youtube and Facebook.  The clouds produced are usually fairly similar in size and texture; never large or particularly billowy.

In the grand scheme of things, after you weigh up the pros and cons of electronic cigarettes, the solution has to come down to personal choice.  You have to pick what feels right to you, and choose according to why you’re wanting to start vaping.  Whether to kick the smoking habit, or to become a cloud chaser, electronic cigarettes are an easier way to start the process.

Tips and Tricks

If we had to list every single tip, trick, and useful hint for electronic cigarettes out there, we would have to write a book on them.  However, there are a few useful tips to remember when using your electronic cigarette to get the most out of the experience.

Overfill is Overkill

Many people tend to overfill the tanks on their electronic cigarettes, as they want it to last as long as possible.  However, we don’t recommend you do that.  If you overfill the tank, it will cause the wick wrapped around the coil to become saturated, which in turn will reduce the airflow over the coil.  This will make your clouds feel weak and less full.  If you hear gurgling sounds when you try to draw a puff on your electronic cigarette, it means you overfilled your tank.

Batteries

Something we all say before we go to bed?  “I need to recharge my batteries.”  However when it comes to electronic cigarettes, we often forget about that crucial detail.  What happens when the batteries get low on an electronic cigarette?  Well, the resistance on your atomiser will remain the same through use, until the battery reaches critical levels, after which you will experience smaller, less satisfying puffs from your electronic cigarette.  As long as you remember to charge your device on a regular basis, this shouldn’t ever happen to you.

Keep It Clean

The last tip we can offer is maintenance.  Always keep an eye on the chambers of your electronic cigarette.  Although it deals primarily with vapour, there’s always a slight residue left behind.  If left unchecked, this can lead up to a build-up of residue, which can alter the flavour of your clouds, or even reduce the size and thickness of the clouds you create.  By making sure you keep the insides of your electronic cigarette clean, you’ll be able to puff away quite contentedly for years to come.

“Innovaping”: The Latest Vaping Technology Trends

Vaping technology trends to look out for in 2016

Current vaping devices have been transformed so that vapers’ can customise their vaping experience to deliver the individual results they want, from a smooth and satisfactory throat hit to better flavour and bigger, thicker clouds. After seeing vaping technology become more intuitive and intelligent, one has to wonder what vaping technology will alter in 2016:
